Citizens for Trees

  • Written by Betsy Turner

We just launched the Online Petition:

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/citystreettrees/

We’re trying to get everyone in Charlotte who is concerned
about the decline of the tree canopy to sign this petition to
let the city council know that trees are important to all of
us, in every part of the city.  This isn't just for the in-town
neighborhoods with old trees, it's for everyone.  So please
send out this link to your neighbors and anyone else you'd
like to include.  If they support this initiative, please ask
them to sign it--and forward it on to others!

Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary Club

  • Written by Quincy Acklen

Our Club had our First Annual "Eat Out for Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary Club and Dilworth Charities" on Wednesday, November 4th. The event was a fund raiser to support the many projects that our club and our Club Foundation - Dilworth Charities - (a 501(c) (3) organization) support on an annual basis. A few of these organizations and projects are as follows: Crisis Assistance Ministry, Salvation Army, USO Of North Carolina-Charlotte Center, the Flight of Honor program, The Dilworth Community Memorial Garden at Latta Park ,the Adopt-A-Street program on East Blvd. ,The Samaritan House, and our International Projects in Alto Cayma, Peru and Kilifi , Kenya .

On November 4th, a portion of the evening’s proceeds were donated by the following fine Dilworth Restaurants- The Greek Isles Restaurant at 200 Bland Street, 300 East at 300 East Blvd, Dilworth Neighborhood Grill at 911 East Morehead Street, Brixx at 1801 Scott Avenue and La Paz at 1910 South Blvd.  Sullivan’s Steakhouse on South Blvd and Outback on East Blvd also supported this event. The support we received from these fine restaurants was amazing and their donation to our Club was most appreciated!

The Charlotte Dilworth South End Rotary Club, a service club of men and women chartered by Rotary International, meets for lunch on Fridays at 12:15PM at Byron’s in South End, 101 West Worthington Avenue . Rotary International has clubs in over 160 nations - a global network of community volunteers!

Public Meeting on Strawn Rezoning

  • Written by administrator
There is currently a rezoning request for the nearly 17-acre parcel surrounding the Strawn Towers, located between Euclid Avenue and South Boulevard. The request includes permitting buildings of 200 feet and 130 feet in height. The current tower is approximately 120 feet tall. Since both of the heights proposed by this rezoning are in considerable violation of the TOD zoning ordinance, DCDA has been following this closely, and submitted comments to both the Housing Authority and Planning Commission. The Charlotte Housing Authority is holding its required public meeting to receive neighborhood comments on the rezoning on February 25 at 5 PM. The meeting will be held at the CHA offices, 1301 South Boulevard. Interested neighbors are invited to attend. For more information, you may contact DCDA Land Use Co-Chair Jill Walker (jkwalker60@gmail) or John Fryday (j This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Dilworth Cares and Pat's Place

  • Written by DCDA
Pat's Place Through the DCDA, a new outreach program called "Dilworth Cares" is being created to make it easier for each of us, as Dilworthians, to show our concern for others. The Dilworth community already does so much for each other and for various non-profits and we, as individuals, all have our own "causes" and passions. "Dilworth Cares" will help us get organized and take our efforts a step further.

An exciting initiative of "Dilworth Cares" is the selection of one organization as the primary focus of our fundraising and volunteer efforts for an entire year. The "Dilworth Cares" year will kick off with the Dilworth Home Tour each September. Pat's Place, Child Advocacy Center will be the focus of our attention for the coming year.

Dilworth Food Pantry Co-Op Pitches In

  • Written by Merrie McGrath

As everyone no doubt knows, demand is higher than ever at our area food pantries and donations are down as a result of the economic downturn.  In response to the ever increasing need, some neighbors have devised a way to pitch in and help by forming the Dilworth Food Pantry Co-Op.

The concept is simple:  Neighbors buy sale items at their grocery or warehouse store and leave them on their front porch (one suggestion is to add the item “food pantry” to your grocery list as a reminder).  They then email or call Co-Op coordinators, MerrieMcGrath and her son, Aubrey, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. DCDA, CHS work to straighten out 'misperceptions'

Concerns over CHS’s acquisition of Dilworth properties highlights need for communication Following UNC’s endorsement in March of plans to expand its School of Medicine in Charlotte, Carolinas HealthCare System has drawn increasing scrutiny as it acquires properties near its medical center in Dilworth. Rumor and conjecture gained steam this summer when CHS, through its real estate representative Lincoln Harris, added properties along East Boulevard and Fountain View Street to its already significant holdings.

The Four Blocks (aka Scott Avenue, Fountain View, Garden Terrace and Lombardy Circle – north side of East Blvd) met with CHS recently. CHS provided us with the following information verbally but would not provide a written copy of their presentation citing competition fears. CHS did provide the Four Blocks with a hard copy of their map titled "CHS Owned properties new CMC":

DEMOLITION PLANS

CHS plans to demolish the following buildings once East Blvd B&G moves to Latta Pavilion. This move is currently scheduled for the first quarter of 2009. They are unsure what they will do with this property once these buildings have been demolished.

  • 1601 East Blvd (currently occupied by East Boulevard Bar & Grill, scheduled to move to Latta Pavilion 01/09)
  • 1607-09 East Blvd (previously occupied by Colours, Wax Museum, ISAACS)
  • 1729 Garden Terrace (previously occupied by Full Closet)
