OPPOSE Rezoning Petition 2010-022

  • Written by Quincy Acklen

IT’S TIME TO ACT … Rezoning Petition 2010-022 goes before City Council this coming Monday night, 6/21 @6:00 pm

Charlotte Housing Authority (CHA) plans to rezone the 17-acre Strawn site (bounded by South Blvd, Rensselaer, Euclid, Templeton & Caldwell) and then sell off parcels to developers. CHA’s current plan for this site:

  • ignores the recommendations of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the world-class land planning group - and in fact almost triples ULI recommendation of about 674 units on site
  • disregards the ULI challenge to create a mixed-income, affordable housing site for Charlotte
  • given the sites proximity to historic residential and the city's acknowledged sensitivity to that fact, we certainly would expect a plan that falls below TOD maximums. This rezoning has development rights that are equivalent to almost 1 1/2 South Park malls!
  • does not provide specific development standards that protect adjacent neighbors or the community
DCDA welcomes development on this site BUT voted unanimously at its June meeting to oppose this project in its current form, believing it needed more time and thoughtful collaboration

LET CITY COUNCIL HEAR YOUR VOICE … DON’T WAIT (WE ONLY HAVE THREE DAYS) !!!

  1. Email and/or call your elected officials (see contact information below)
  2. Respond 'yes' to Betsy Turner ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) that you will attend the Monday, 6/21 meeting at 6:00 pm at the Government Center, 600 East Fourth Street, Main Floor. Let us know if you need a ride! We can connect you with someone nearby who is carpooling to the meeting. The council needs to see that Dilworth residents are united in their opposition to this massive development in its current form. Wear a green shirt if possible and be prepared to stand when the DCDA speakers present.
  3. Sign petition located at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/strawnrezoning/ (if you get a message requesting donation it is not necessary to sign petition, simply bypass this message - your signature and comments will be added)

The message can be as brief as "I oppose this rezoning petition" OR as detailed as you like! Just get it out ASAP. Email each council member separately and not as a group
